Kommentar/Beschreibung

As young professionals with technical backgrounds, you may often have the opportunity to live and work in culturally diverse environments. In this course, we will take a look at how the view on cultural differences and the way we think about them have evolved over the past few decades. We will learn about models for reflecting on, comparing, and engaging with cultural differences. During the course of our Seminar, we will explore earlier theories following the idea that a person's culture shapes their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, such as Edward T. Hall’s concepts of Proxemics, Monochronic and Polychronic Time, and High- and Low-Context Cultures, as well as Geert Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions Model, which provides a framework for comparing specific cultures based on statistical findings, ranging to more contemporary approaches with nuanced perspectives as, for example, described in Wolfgang Welsch's concept of Transculturality. He describes modern societies as being thoroughly interwoven while individuals create their own identities as they experience themselves belonging to a variety of different groups and contexts. This approach emphazises the fact that oftentimes, associations with certain groups such as the type of profession may have an even greater influence on an indiviuals counstitution of identity than e.g. a certain cultural backround. During the course of our seminar, the participants will work on these different perspectives in groups, which provides an opportunity for discussion and exchange between people from different cultural backgrounds. We will discuss the angles and relate the material to our own experiences with shifting cultural contexts.
