Kommentar/Beschreibung

During our professional lives, engineers will spend approximately 80,000 hours solving problems of many different kinds. Which of these problems do we choose to focus on? How consciously do we make this decision, and according to which criteria? Which values, interests, and needs shape these choices—and with what weight? And what costs are we willing to accept, socially, environmentally, and personally, in pursuit of a particular solution? These and related questions form the basis of an interactive seminar organised by students for students, which explores ethical aspects of career choices and discusses possible frameworks for evaluating professional decisions. In the first part of the course, the fundamental challenges are introduced and promising approaches are analysed through selected examples. In the second part, students design and facilitate their own interactive teaching units in small groups. Choosing freely between workshop formats and case analyses, they address exemplary challenges and develop possible solution concepts. Particular emphasis is placed on identifying and reflecting upon one's own interests, motivations, and responsibilities within the engineering profession.
