Recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) raise profound questions about its nature and capabilities: Can AI think? Do Large Language Models (LLMs) understand language? Does AI have agency? Could AI ever achieve consciousness? This seminar will explore these questions and others related to cognition and AI. Students will read and engage with key philosophical works from the philosophy of mind and the philosophy of AI, including foundational texts by Alan Turing, John Searle, and Daniel Dennett, as well as contemporary contributions to the ongoing debates surrounding generative AI. The seminar will cover the following topics in relation to AI: Consciousness, intentionality, meaning, understanding, agency, embodiment, the extended mind hypothesis, and more. Students will gain insight into the workings of AI and LLMs while also learning to apply and critically analyse philosophical ideas and methods. Additionally, the course will examine how these topics intersect with ethical questions surrounding human-AI interaction, brain-computer interfaces, and the moral status of AI.
