There are complex points of contact between science and politics. These include the definition of research agendas, the preparation and funding of grant proposals, as well as the publication and application of research results. Scientists are increasingly required to recognize and take into account the political dimension of their work and their role within political processes. In order to assume responsibility for the political, economic, ecological, social, and moral consequences of scientific work, engineers and scientists need ethical guidelines. This seminar will address the political dimension of scientific practice. Discussions will focus on the individual responsibility of scientists for the social impact of their work, the biographies and motivations of renowned scientists, and the role of codes of conduct as frameworks for responsible action.
